Job Summary

Absa Bank is looking for a skilled SME Banker to manage and sustain a portfolio of Business Banking – Enterprise customers. The role involves building long-term relationships, conducting financial risk assessments, and supporting customers with tailored banking solutions. The SME Banker will also focus on business development by acquiring new clients and growing the existing portfolio.


Key Responsibilities

1. Sales and Service

  • Conduct annual and interim reviews of customers’ borrowing facilities based on risk profiles.
  • Grow the portfolio by cross-selling Absa products and meeting set targets.
  • Provide financial and credit consultations to business owners.
  • Identify customer needs and recommend suitable banking products and services.
  • Handle and resolve customer complaints efficiently.
  • Plan and coordinate marketing approaches for new and existing business opportunities.
  • Monitor customer service standards and ensure compliance with risk management guidelines.

2. Business Management

  • Research and follow up on target businesses for potential customer acquisition.
  • Prioritize customers based on their present and potential contribution to the bank.
  • Gather all necessary information to prepare and assess credit applications.
  • Monitor portfolio quality using “Condition of Sanction” triggers and RM guidelines.
  • Manage customers on the “Early Warning List” to mitigate potential risks.
  • Ensure adherence to Business Banking Relationship Manager Credit Delegation (BB RMCD) guidelines.

3. Staff & Risk Management

  • Coordinate business banking customer management at the branch level.
  • Act as a crisis coordinator in case of major business unit issues, allocating tasks to crisis teams.
  • Regularly review risk and compliance profiles and advise senior management on necessary changes.
  • Stay updated with regulatory changes and their impact on the business.
  • Complete all mandatory training within deadlines.

Required Qualifications

Requirement Details
Education Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, or a related field
Training Risk assessment and management, communication, presentation, influencing, and negotiation skills
Experience Minimum 2 years of experience in SME or Business Banking
Technical Skills Relationship management, risk assessment, leadership, product knowledge, and corporate banking skills
Soft Skills Strong communication, analytical thinking, decision-making, adaptability, and teamwork

Knowledge & Expertise

  • Strong understanding of Business Banking products and services.
  • Ability to recognize customer needs and introduce relevant banking solutions.
  • Awareness of financial policies and strategies across Absa Group.
  • Ability to manage a diverse range of SME customers and handle competitive challenges.
