Job Overview

Selcom Microfinance Bank Tanzania Limited is seeking a highly motivated and ethical Junior Legal Counsel to ensure that the Bank’s operations comply with the law and that its interests are fully protected. The successful candidate will represent the Bank in legal matters, support recovery activities, manage legal documents, and maintain case records.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Legal Compliance & Representation:
    • Execute the Bank’s operations in strict adherence to legal requirements and ensure the Bank’s interests are safeguarded at all times.
    • Represent the Bank in Courts of Law for both defense and prosecution of civil suits.
  • Recovery Activities:
    • Coordinate, support, and conduct recovery activities by assisting in investigations, providing technical guidance in recoveries, and updating the credit & recovery status of court orders restraining the Bank.
    • Follow up diligently to ensure the Bank recovers its monies.
  • Auction Representation:
    • Represent the Bank in auctions and coordinate with auctioneers to ensure collaterals are auctioned according to the law and Bank procedures.
    • Handle customer interactions to maximize cash recoveries and ensure appropriate recovery actions.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Manage the daily activities, schedules, diaries, and documents of the legal team, prioritizing multiple requirements effectively while being an excellent team player.
    • Provide prompt responses, maintain discretion and confidentiality, and report on the status of legal activities to the supervisor.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting:
    • Ensure proper record keeping, case tracking, and timely reporting of legal activities.
  • Legal Document Management:
    • Draft, review, and monitor the Bank’s legal documents, such as pleadings and other related documents.

Selection Criteria and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1-year experience in a similar legal role.
  • Registered Advocate of the High Court of Tanzania.
  • High integrity, independence, and strong adherence to professional ethics.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic computer software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize Bank tasks according to operational and strategic importance.
  • Willingness to learn and improve continuously.
  • Analytical, proactive, and a strong team player.
