Program Overview
The Universal Health Coverage – Life Course (UHC-LC) team at the World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking an enthusiastic intern to support its mission to enhance Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through a primary health care approach. The team collaborates with the Ministry of Health and other partners to achieve significant health goals, including:
- Designing effective strategies to expand Tanzania’s National Essential Health Care Intervention package.
- Mobilizing resources for essential health services and promoting continuous quality improvement.
- Providing technical assistance for developing efficient health financing strategies.
- Ensuring equitable allocation of health funds and improving the availability of quality medicines and medical products.
- Enhancing coordination among health stakeholders to maximize value for money in the health sector.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the UHC-LC cluster lead, the intern will undertake the following tasks:
- Review health sector policies in Tanzania and their alignment with WHO’s Primary Health Care (PHC) framework.
- Conduct literature reviews to identify key drivers of mortality and morbidity in Tanzania.
- Participate in data collection for evaluations conducted by the UHC-LC Cluster.
- Document the utilization of guidelines in low- and middle-income countries.
- Assist in drafting, formatting, and editing policy briefs, guides, manuals, handouts, brochures, and reports.
- Help organize workshops focused on building the capacities of national experts.
Learning Objectives
This internship offers a comprehensive learning experience for students and recent graduates. Interns will:
- Gain insights into WHO’s objectives to increase access to quality health services at the country level.
- Learn how WHO aims to help one billion more people access Universal Health Coverage by 2025.
- Understand the roles of WHO headquarters, regional offices, and country offices.
- Develop skills in generating local evidence through literature reviews and surveys.
- Prepare background documents for meetings and draft outlines for various documents.
Duration
The internship will last for 9 weeks.
Qualifications
Education:
- Completion of at least three years of full-time study in health-related sciences, social sciences, or international relations, with ongoing enrollment in a relevant course leading to a formal qualification. Recent graduates are also eligible if applying within six months of completion.
Skills:
- Teamwork and respect for individual and cultural differences.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Proficiency in commonly used computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of ArcGIS or PowerBI is advantageous.
Experience:
- Experience communicating with multicultural teams.
- Experience in literature reviews and producing academic reports.
Languages:
- Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
- Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of Swahili.
Financial Support
- Living Allowance: Interns receive a living allowance based on the duty station and other external support. In Dar es Salaam, the maximum allowance is provided by WHO.
- Insurance: WHO provides accident and medical insurance coverage.
- Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA): Provided for field missions.
Additional Information
- Interns are not eligible for consultant or non-staff contracts with WHO for three months following the internship but may apply for temporary or longer-term staff positions.
