Internship Overview

Position: Intern (3 Positions)
Reports to: Project Principal Investigator
Location: Dar es Salaam
Application Deadline: August 14, 2024

IHI, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, National Malaria Control Programme, and other key stakeholders, is implementing the second phase of the Molecular Surveillance of Malaria in Mainland Tanzania (MSMT2) project. We are seeking motivated graduates for internships that will provide specialized training in malaria molecular surveillance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample Handling: Collect, process, and analyze samples following project needs and SOPs.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance and ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • Data Management: Process specimens, record test results, and manage specimen storage according to SOPs.
  • Technical Procedures: Plan and execute routine and specialized technical procedures, including troubleshooting.
  • Quality Control: Ensure compliance with GCLP standards and participate in quality control programs.
  • Communication: Maintain effective communication with project staff, hospital teams, and field teams.
  • Additional Skills: Engage in science communication, grant writing, manuscript development, and gain skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, and bioinformatics.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, molecular biology, or biotechnology obtained within the last 24 months.
  • Registration: Candidates registered with the Health Laboratory Practitioners Council will be given preference.
  • Academic Performance: Minimum GPA of 3.8 and demonstrated potential for science leadership.
  • Experience: Practical skills in molecular biology techniques and at least one year of relevant experience is an advantage.

  • Technical Skills: Practical and technical abilities with potential for further training.
  • Problem-Solving: Complex problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Communication: Proficiency in Kiswahili and English, with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
