Job Summary

VisionFund Tanzania (VFT), a subsidiary of VisionFund International, is seeking an experienced Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead its operations. The CEO will be responsible for driving financial and social performance, ensuring sustainability, and expanding access to financial services for vulnerable communities in Tanzania. The role requires strong leadership, strategic vision, and financial management expertise to transform lives through microfinance solutions.

The successful candidate will be tasked with growing VFT’s impact while ensuring operational efficiency, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The CEO will also oversee VFT’s transition into a regulated deposit-taking institution.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Business Growth

  • Implement the vision, mission, and strategic objectives set by the Board and VisionFund International.
  • Ensure financial sustainability while achieving social impact goals.
  • Lead the development and execution of VFT’s Strategic Plan, Three-Year Business Plan, and Annual Plan.
  • Manage financial and non-financial resources to support business growth and efficiency.
  • Establish a high-performance organizational culture focused on accountability, excellence, and community impact.

Financial & Risk Management

  • Oversee budgeting, financial projections, and cost management to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, tax laws, and banking sector policies.
  • Develop and implement internal controls and risk management strategies to protect depositors and institutional assets.
  • Maintain portfolio quality and liquidity management standards in alignment with VisionFund International guidelines.

Fundraising & Stakeholder Relations

  • Negotiate funding agreements with creditors, grant bodies, and financial institutions.
  • Ensure proper reporting and compliance with donor requirements.
  • Establish partnerships with World Vision to develop integrated livelihood programs and secure funding.
  • Represent VFT in national and international financial and microfinance forums.

Regulatory & Compliance Oversight

  • Ensure adherence to policies set by VisionFund International and local regulatory authorities.
  • Lead VFT through the transition to becoming a regulated deposit-taking institution.
  • Maintain transparency with the Board and VisionFund International on regulatory affairs and business performance.

Institutional Strengthening & Capacity Building

  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-caliber leadership and management teams.
  • Implement staff development, succession planning, and performance management systems.
  • Foster a work environment that reflects VisionFund’s Christian values and mission.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and employee engagement.

Operational Excellence & Integration

  • Ensure effective collaboration between VisionFund Tanzania and World Vision for integrated programs.
  • Align VFT’s branding, services, and programs with its mission and social impact goals.
  • Strengthen operational efficiency to maintain VFT’s status as one of the leading microfinance institutions in Tanzania.

Required Qualifications

Requirement Details
Education Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Management, or a related field.
Experience Minimum of 10 years in senior leadership roles within microfinance, banking, international business, or economic development.
Industry Knowledge Strong understanding of the microfinance sector, financial technology, and regulatory environments.
Leadership Skills Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
Financial Acumen Expertise in budgeting, risk management, and financial sustainability.
Regulatory Experience Experience working in regulated financial environments, particularly in savings and deposit-taking institutions.
Communication & Networking Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.

Work Environment & Travel Requirements

  • Office-based with frequent travel to field locations (40% travel, 60% office work).
  • Domestic travel (90%) and some international travel (10%) required.
  • Candidates who are not Tanzanian nationals must obtain a work permit.
  • Available for on-call duties beyond standard working hours.
