One of TNC’s flagship programs in Africa is the Africa Forest Carbon Catalyst (AFCC), which supports Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) by funding and guiding high-quality carbon projects for the carbon market.

Job Overview

The Africa Forest Carbon Catalyst (AFCC) Director will lead TNC’s efforts to scale NCS projects across Africa. The role involves managing partnerships, securing funding, overseeing project development, and aligning AFCC’s strategy with TNC’s global climate goals. The position requires travel across Africa (up to 25%) and reports to the Africa Climate Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of the AFCC program, ensuring quality, integrity, and accountability.
  • Oversee and direct AFCC projects, ensuring they meet TNC’s 2030 conservation goals.
  • Develop partnerships with private donors and public funding sources to secure financing.
  • Negotiate with government agencies and landowners to develop sustainable conservation strategies.
  • Manage relationships with external partners, experts, and investors in the carbon market.
  • Allocate and oversee the AFCC budget.
  • Organize and lead AFCC donor roundtables and fundraising roadshows.
  • Oversee project demonstrations for investors and carbon buyers.
  • Supervise and develop the AFCC team, providing leadership and professional growth opportunities.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) and at least 7 years of experience in conservation, climate policy, or related fields.
  • Proven experience in fundraising, donor engagement, and securing financial support.
  • Strong expertise in carbon markets, climate finance, and environmental project development.
  • Experience managing complex conservation projects and budgets.
  • Supervisory experience, including team leadership and motivation.
  • Strong networking skills in forestry, climate change, and conservation.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 7–10 years of experience in conservation.
  • Multilingual or cross-cultural work experience.
  • Strong understanding of Africa’s climate policy, carbon projects, and sustainability efforts.
  • Experience in business planning, financial modeling, and policy negotiations.
  • Ability to work in diverse environmental conditions, including remote and challenging locations.
