Job Summary

Trees for the Future (TREES) is seeking a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Officer to support the development and implementation of MEL systems for our agroforestry projects in Tanzania. The MEL Officer will ensure high-quality data collection, validation, and reporting to enhance project implementation and support farmers’ success. This role involves conducting field visits, training staff, managing data systems, and providing technical support for data-driven decision-making.

The MEL Officer will work closely with the Country MEL Coordinator, field teams, and external stakeholders to improve monitoring and evaluation practices.


Key Responsibilities

Data Collection & Analysis

  • Conduct field visits for data validation, cleaning, and quality assurance.
  • Lead data collection using standardized tools and ensure timely reporting.
  • Analyze and interpret data to provide insights for program improvements.
  • Support the development of data visualization tools for MEL reporting.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Oversee project monitoring activities, ensuring compliance with TREES’ MEL framework.
  • Assist in coordinating surveys such as Nursery Appraisal Checklists (NAC), Sample Surveys, and Forest Garden Standard assessments.
  • Ensure timely submission and review of Monthly Reporting Forms (MRF).
  • Consolidate and draft monthly, quarterly, and annual reports in collaboration with project teams.

Training & Capacity Building

  • Train field staff and partners on MEL methodologies, tools, and reporting systems.
  • Provide ongoing support to field teams on data collection using TaroWorks and other digital platforms.
  • Ensure data integrity and consistency across multiple reporting platforms.

Stakeholder Engagement & Learning

  • Strengthen coordination with government authorities, NGOs, and project partners.
  • Participate in MEL-related working groups and professional networks.
  • Conduct quarterly project performance reviews and facilitate learning sessions.
  • Document best practices, case studies, and lessons learned to improve MEL strategies.

Technical Support & Innovation

  • Provide strategic planning and advisory support on MEL-related issues.
  • Coordinate and manage drone surveys as part of MEL activities.
  • Develop learning documents to capture project insights and impact.

Required Qualifications

Requirement Details
Education Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Social Science, Information Technology, or a related field
Experience Minimum of 2 years in MEL roles within NGOs, UN agencies, or government projects
Technical Skills Proficiency in statistical software, Android technology, and web-based databases
Data Analysis Experience with data quality assessments, report production, and survey management
Training & Support Experience training and mentoring MEL field officers
Languages Fluency in English; Swahili or a local language is an advantage
