Introduction: Are you passionate about driving social change, particularly in Indigenous communities? The Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity (AFSE) Fellowship offers a life-changing opportunity to immerse yourself in Indigenous-led social change initiatives. Based at the University of Melbourne, this fellowship program is a 20+ year investment into building a network of change-makers dedicated to fostering social equity.

Program Overview: The AFSE Fellowship consists of an intensive foundation year, where Fellows undertake a Master of Social Change Leadership at the University of Melbourne, free of charge. During this year, participants attend six in-person modules and develop a social change project to implement upon completion. Graduates of the foundation year become members of the global Atlantic Fellows community, collaborating with change-makers from across seven hubs coordinated by the Atlantic Institute in Oxford.

Social Change Project: A core component of the fellowship is the development of a social change project. Throughout the foundation year, Fellows refine and shape their project, drawing upon critical Indigenous scholarship from Australia, Aotearoa, and beyond. While the project idea does not need to be fully formed at the application stage, we are seeking individuals with a clear vision for Indigenous social change.

Time Commitment: Fellows are required to attend all intensive weeks and dedicate additional time to independent study and project development. This is a full-time commitment equivalent to 40 hours per week. Despite busy schedules, AFSE provides resources and support to ensure successful completion of the program.

Support: AFSE covers all course fees for the postgraduate study at the University of Melbourne, as well as associated Student Services and Amenities Fees. Additionally, Fellows receive one-on-one tutoring, mental health support from Indigenous psychologists and counselors, and disability access and support.

Eligibility: The AFSE Fellowship is designed for community-focused, mid-career applicants, primarily Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Māori peoples. However, non-Indigenous individuals from Australia, Aotearoa, and Pacific Island nations with a track record of work in Indigenous affairs are also encouraged to apply. Approximately 20 Fellows are accepted each year.

Selection Criteria: Applications are assessed based on the compelling Indigenous social change idea, capacity to create and execute a project, collaborative skills, critical thinking, and commitment to lifelong learning. Final cohort selection aims for diversity in work background, age, gender, and Indigenous representation.
